Concrete Testing at Barr & Prevost Goes Green

Like many companies, Barr & Prevost is paying a lot more attention to its carbon footprint. We’re doing all we can to consume less and recycle more in our work environment. We’re doing the simple things like cutting down on paper use where possible, recycling office products, and watching out for phantom power consumption by various electronic devices we use. In our professional capacity, we’ve embraced environmentally-friendly sustainable design principles. Still, we know there’s more to be done.

So, what is a concrete testing laboratory to do about the thousands of plastic test cylinder molds it consumes each year that can’t be reused or conveniently recycled? We think we’ve found a “green” solution.

Barr & Prevost is now using cornstarch-based “Bio-cylinder” test molds for concrete testing. And as part of the new generation of cornstarch-based plastic products, they really do biodegrade when placed into an active landfill and are recyclable. They meet ASTM standards, and we have found their performance to be satisfactory.
